It is common to feel nervous before any procedure that involves tampering with your internal organs. If you want to know what you should expect, read journal entries from real patients and you can prepare yourself in advance.
Week 1 After You Are Released From the Bariatric Surgery Center
You may feel under the weather for the first two days. By day 3, it is normal to feel like you have gotten through the worst of it. Some patients require pain medications and others are able to bare the pain without any medication. You should be able to walk around your home during the middle of week 1. Most patients will follow a liquids only diet and you should not experience cravings or hunger. Most patients will consume between 300 and 450 calories per day during week one.
Week 2
During week two, you may be up to driving and running very small errands. During this stage, your diet will be upgraded to smoothies. You can make cream soups, fruit smoothies, and blend vegetables to get all of the vitamins you need. At this point, you will consume 450 to 550 calories per day. You will start to feel motivated and energetic as you continue you to recover.
Knowing what to expect before you experience it will help you cope. If you know people who have undergone surgery in a bariatric surgery center, ask them how they felt during week 1 and week 2 and you will know if your symptoms are normal.
